Step 1. Draw the Outlines

Before you begin you will need: Two sharp pencils, (one pencil must be short enough to pass under the horses fetlock). Several pieces of 8-1/2" x 11" white paper. A smooth level surface. (A piece of plywood 14" x 17" is adequate).

Outline of hoof. Hold pencil straight up and down.

Tips: Have a helper hold up the horse's opposite leg.

It helps to, "eye" down the pencil.

When drawing the back of the hoof, angle the pencil as shown in the photo.

Tip: Move the pencil back and forth several times to get a good line.

Bulb outline. Use the short pencil.

Hold the pencil straight up and down as you draw the outline of the bulbs.

Be sure to indicate the hoof with initials.

Measurements

1. Width of hoof. Draw a line across the widest part of the outline. Measure that line. Write the measurement on the line.

In the photo to the right the width measures 8 inches.

2. Length of hoof. Draw a line from the toe to the back of the hoof line. (Not the bulb line). Measure that line. Write the measurement on the line.

In the photo at right the length measures 7-3/4 inches.

3. 'Wing' measurement. Place the measuring tape around the hoof as indicated in the photo. The 'wing' measurement in the photo below is 15-1/2 inches.

The end of the measuring tape should be 1 inch up from the surface the horse is standing on. Start and end points are equivalent to 10 and 2 on a clock.

4. Height of bulb Measure from the ground up to the back most point of bulb.

The height of the bulb in the photo below measures 2 inches.

5. Length of bulb. Measure from back of ankle to back, (end point), of bulb.
